Count on You

I don’t know the trials that may come my way today

But I need a saving hand, of this I’m sure

My heart and flesh may fail before the morning fades

And I’m not sure if my faith can endure

For all I know, I don’t know what to do

But I know you count the stars and call them all by name

And I know you calmed the storm and stilled the raging waves

And I know gave your life and conquered the grave

This I know for sure: I can count on you to save

So I’ll trust in your mercy

I’ll rest in your grace

Till my heart finds no other home

I will sing for your glory

I’ll dance in your love

And forever I will worship at your throne

For I know you count the stars and call them all by name

And I know you calmed the storm and stilled the raging waves

And I know gave your life and conquered the grave

This I know for sure: I can count on you to save

Dwelling Place

Sitting here at your feet

I just want to know you

Looking into your eyes

Hearing you speak

All the worries of life

Fade in your presence

There’s no place on earth

I’d rather be

Chorus

How lovely is your dwelling place

My soul longs, Lord, I yearn for you

My heart sings joyful praise

Your glory turns my highest gaze

To Jesus, You’re my dwelling place

Kneeling here at your cross

I just want to thank you

Thinking upon your blood

Poured out for me

All the guilt of my sin

It’s been forgiven

Nailed to the cross

Of Calvary

Jesus, You’re my Sun and You’re my Shield

My life to you forever I will yield

Your goodness and your grace

How awesome is this place

Where you draw me near

And make your heart my home

Bowing here at your throne

I just want to worship

Hailing you as my King

Ruler of all

All of heaven and earth

Kneel in confession

“Jesus Christ is Lord”

Glory to God!

Praise from A to Z

One of my favorite chapters in the Psalms is 145. I preached from this chapter my next to last Sunday in Ridgway, then (don't tell anyone) again in Petersburg this past Sunday. The more I read it and meditate on it, the more my heart rises in praise to and adoration of our mighty and compassionate God.

This psalm is an acrostic poem, using the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet to begin each verse. In an attempt to express my own praise to the Lord, I've come up with this offering modeled after the psalmist's poetic work.

Able, God, You’re able
There is nothing You can’t do

Blessed Lord, my Father
Hear my song of praise to You

Compassionate forever
O, how caring toward all men

Deliverer eternal
How You’ve saved me from my sin

Everlasting, evermore
Your kingdom shall endure

Faithful God, so faithful
All Your promises are sure

Gracious God, in Jesus
Blessings pour out from Your heart

Holy, Holy, Holy
Lord Almighty God Thou art

Incomparable, unparalleled
O, who is like You, Lord?

Just, in perfect justice, God
You give each his reward

King of kings, in glory
In majestic, wondrous fame

Lord of lords, one day will
Every tongue proclaim Your name

Merciful and mighty
You are loving, yet so strong

Near to those who cry out
You’re the Help for whom we long

O, the One and Only
Son of God, my Savior, Friend

Prince of Peace, Almighty God
Your praise will never end

Quickly to my rescue
Lord, You come and satisfy

Rock of my salvation
God, Your name I glorify

Savior, blessed Savior
Jesus, stronghold for the weak

True and truly lovely
You’re the treasure that I seek

Unfailing is Your love, O Lord
You never lead astray

Victory is sure to those
Who follow in Your way

Wonderful Your counsel
By Your Word I walk in light

Excellent Your Spirit
Your sweet presence day and night

Yahweh, at Your holy name
I’ll bless You all my days

Zealous for Your glory
May the whole world sing Your praise

The Sacrifice

On the cross your body torn
Battered from the stripes you’d borne
Bruised from blows unjustified
Beaten, broken, crucified

On the cross your blood flowed down
Seeping from that mocking crown
Dripping from your hands and feet
Pouring from your heart’s last beat

Who would bear such pain and strife
Who would lay down his own life
Who would suffer such disgrace
Who would suffer in my place

Matchless Love, O matchless Love
Matchless gift of God above
Mercy for my sinful soul
Mercy cleansed and made me whole

Jesus, O what love you showed
Saved me from the debt I owed
On the cross you paid the price
Lamb of God, the sacrifice

Sing, my soul, you’ve been set free
Guilt and shame are history
Death has no more sting or claim
Life is yours in Jesus’ name

Praise the Lord who came to save
Jesus triumphed o’er the grave
One day He’ll return as King
Glory in the highest sing

True-Hearted Worship [A Thanksgiving Song]

I offer the following verses in thanksgiving and praise to the One whom I worship with ever-increasing desire that my heart be true and that His name be glorified.

Why is my heart so full of thanks
With praises on my tongue?
Why do I smile in my soul
When Jesus songs are sung?
I’ll shout it from the mountain high
Till every ear has heard:
My Jesus loves me this I know,
He told me in His Word

My heart is filled with holy fear
In reverence for my King
Almighty God, the Lord of lords
Who reigns o’er everything
I’ll offer up my very life
The cross I’ll gladly bear
Proclaim salvation in His name
To people everywhere

Give me an undefiled heart
That’s faithful, right and true
Lord, anchor my soul to your Word
Cleanse me through and through
Whom have I, Lord, on earth or heav’n
Apart from You alone?
O may your Spirit take my heart
And bind it to your throne

My heart is filled with peace and joy
In Christ, my great delight
Who saved me from the dark of hell
And brought me to His light
O Christian, join your heart in praise
Give thanks with grateful song
The Lord is good, His faithfulness
Endures forever long.

Overwhelmed

I composed the following lines a year ago in gratitude to the Ridgway First Baptist Church for the many ways in which they have demonstrated the love and grace of God to me and my family. I am truly overwhelmed by God's presence and power on display among His people.

Psalm 28:7 says, "The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song."

These words attempt to convey my humble thanksgiving before my gracious Savior and Lord.

Overwhelmed

Overwhelmed by God’s great mercy
Overjoyed yet by His grace
Gently raise my hands in wonder
Humbly bow in grateful praise
For our Father, our Provider
Overwhelms me with His love
Pouring blessing after blessing
From His heavn’ly throne above

God is gracious, full of kindness
Slow to anger, rich in love
Strong in power, grand in splendor
Highest praise He’s worthy of
He exalts the lowly servant
Who cries out unto His name
Watching ever, leaving never
Age to age He is the same

What have I done to deserve His
Overwhelming grace divine?
Chief of sinners, my description
Death and hell, my final fine
But then Jesus, to my rescue,
Shed His blood upon the tree
Poured His grace out in abundance
Gave Himself to set me free

When I dwell in contemplation
On the goodness of my King
How my thankful heart keeps longing
For the perfect song to sing
How I long to bring Him glory
How I long to love Him more
In the beauty of His presence
Overwhelmed my soul does soar

Father, bring Your church to glory
Raise her up in Christ alone
Grant her strength to be Your witness
Let her love flow as Your own
Thank you for her glowing kindness,
Overwhelming grace to me
Let her radiate that brightness
Desperate for the world to see

In gratitude to Ridgway First Baptist Church for their overwhelming love.

Possibilities - A Father's Prayer for His Son

The following lyrics were penned while my wife and I were expecting the arrival of our son almost eight years ago. We still wonder at how the Lord will use him for His glory in this world, and we like to imagine the possibilities. And our prayer is still that Tyler (and our newer addition, Toby) will see the boundless love of the heavenly Father on display in Amy and me - and be drawn closer to Christ every day. I almost posted this in time for Father's Day!

He’s gonna need a Mom to teach him how
To sing and dance and laugh
He’s gonna need her voice to read to him
Of trains and trees and giraffes
He’s gonna need her touch when he’s feeling down
Her smile to turn his world around
Lord, please let him see how a Mother’s love should be

And maybe he’ll be a doctor who finds
The cure for a deadly disease
Or maybe he’ll fly a mission exploring some
Unknown galaxies
Lord, we can only guess what You’ve planned
But we pray that one day he’ll take Your hand
Living full of possibilities
And go wherever You lead

He’s gonna need a Dad to show him how
To throw and bat the ball
He’s gonna need him there for his first bike ride
Ready to catch his fall
He’s gonna need his strength in the dark of night
His praise to know when he’s doing right
Lord, please let him see how a Father’s love should be

And maybe he’ll be a doctor who finds
The cure for a deadly disease
Or maybe he’ll fly a mission exploring some
Unknown galaxies
Lord, we can only guess what You’ve planned
But we pray that one day he’ll take Your hand
Living full of possibilities
And go wherever You lead

Lord, we’re holding out so much hope
As we patiently await
This gift of life You’re placing in our care
Please let the love he sees in us
Be Yours he’ll imitate
And may he always be cradled in our prayer
